Company & Team Introduction

Profitual is the AI-powered financial intelligence startup reshaping financial planning for early-stage startups. Founded in October 2022 and headquartered in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the company has rapidly expanded to a team of 8 full-time employees, evenly divided between product and customer-facing roles. Led by CEO and Founder Ray Fitzpatrick, who brings substantial experience from his tenure as Director of Investments at the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, Profitual thrives on an innovative and empowering company culture. Under Ray’s leadership, Profitual has quickly established itself as a key player in the FP&A space for startups.

Product Overview

Profitual offers an intuitive financial planning platform tailored to early-stage founders, simplifying complex financial processes and empowering them to manage forecasts independently without the need for a full-time CFO. By combining real-time benchmarking with industry-specific insights, Profitual enables smarter, faster decision-making to drive startup growth.

Key features include:

Automated Financial Management: Profitual seamlessly integrates with accounting tools like QuickBooks and Xero, automatically updating financial data to generate accurate financial statements. This eliminates manual entry, saves time, and ensures consistency across a company’s financial statements.
Scenario Planning: Allows founders to model ‘what if’ scenarios in real time, providing clarity on the financial impact of potential decisions such as hiring, raising funding, or scaling operations.
Variance Analysis: Identifies discrepancies between forecasts and actual performance, helping founders track progress, pinpoint issues, and optimize resource allocation.
Benchmarking: Offers instant comparisons of a startup’s financial performance against industry standards, giving founders valuable context and a competitive edge.
Investor Sharing: Facilitates transparent communication with investors by delivering real-time financial updates, improving trust and streamlining due diligence.
Data Visualization: Transforms complex financial data into clear, visually engaging charts, graphs, and visuals, making it easier for founders to analyze trends, track performance, and communicate financial insights clearly and effectively.
AI-Powered Forecast Evaluator: Analyzes financial models in under three minutes, providing a detailed report with actionable recommendations to refine planning and decision-making.

Total Addressable Market

Profitual operates in the rapidly growing financial planning software market, valued at $4.3 billion in 2023, and forecasts indicate the industry will reach $18.2 billion by 2033, growing at an impressive 15.5% CAGR through the period. As the number of startups, particularly in tech and SaaS, continues to rise, demand for affordable, scalable financial tools grows. Profitual’s AI-powered platform is perfectly suited to meet their needs, simplifying financial planning for early-stage startups and allowing founders to manage cash flow, forecasting, and strategic decisions without a full-time CFO. Profitual’s affordable, intuitive, and scalable platform positions them well to capture a good portion of this rapidly expanding market.

For 2024, Profitual had ~$400k in revenue and is looking to capitalize on its momentum through geographical expansion in 2025, giving the company a much larger cohort of potential customers to sell to.

Traction

Since its inception, Profitual has seen strong traction, working with customers like MedReddie, Eigen Innovations, Climative, Populus Global, and Xatoms. In addition to its growing customer base, the company has forged key partnerships with top national accelerators like DMZ, graduated from the Next AI accelerator in Montreal, and has been recognized as one of Canada's top 20 new AI startups. The platform has also seen strong traction across Canada, indicating widespread adoption. These milestones reflect Profitual’s value proposition and effectiveness in addressing a critical gap for early-stage startups.

Competitors

Profitual operates in a competitive space alongside established players like LivePlan, Pry Financials, and Jirav, which offer financial planning and forecasting solutions for startups and small businesses. However, these traditional tools often fall short for early-stage founders due to their steep learning curves, high costs, or generic approaches that fail to address the fast-paced and resource-constrained nature of startups. Profitual distinguishes itself by focusing on early-stage startups and delivering an intuitive, founder-friendly experience that requires no prior financial expertise.

What truly sets Profitual apart is its integration of real-time benchmarking, providing startups with immediate, industry-specific insights—a feature absent in most competitors. This allows founders to make more informed decisions faster, aligning their strategy with current market conditions. Unlike competitors who rely on static models or manual customization, Profitual’s automated scenario planning and forecasting adapt dynamically, saving founders time and resources. With its customer-centric approach and focus on ease of use, Profitual empowers founders to achieve CFO-level precision without the overhead, making it the optimal choice for early-stage startups seeking to scale efficiently while keeping their teams lean.

Funding

Profitual has raised a total of $1.15 million to date. This includes an initial $150,000 friends and family round, followed by a $1 million seed round led by a regional angel investor in October 2022. The company is currently in the process of raising a $500,000 seed extension with a target close of February 2025, with the majority of capital already committed. Expansion capital will be used to deepen Profitual’s presence in Western Canada, enter the US market (massive opportunity), and continue investing in their platform, particularly around AI-powered features.
